1st place, Robious Elementary School

Robious Elementary School won the third annual Chesterfield Junior Cup held Saturday, May 6th at James River High School.

Over eighty fourth and fifth grade students from eleven Chesterfield County elementary schools participated in the tennis play day event.

The Richmond Tennis Association and the United States Tennis Association partnered with Chesterfield County Public Schools to bring tennis to Chesterfield County elementary school students in PE class and through after-school programming.

Students had a chance to demonstrate their tennis skills and sportsmanship on Saturday in front of a crowd of parents, siblings and volunteers.

2nd place, Winterpock Elementary

Richmond City Public School students, four girls and four boys from each participating school played short, mixed doubles matches on mini courts using smaller racquets and nets, and low-compression balls.

The tournament featured a round-robin format in which students competed for points.

Points were tallied for each school, eventually crowning the winners.

In addition, students participated in other off-court tennis related activities. The USTA set up a “photo booth” area.

Other activities included a prize court, relays, obstacle courses and skill-related games.

A zumba instructor from acac Midlothian got students warmed up and excited to go on court.

Elementary schools participating in the Chesterfield Junior Cup were: A.M. Davis, Alberta Smith, Bensley, Chalkley, Enon, Greenfield, Providence, Robious, Salem Church, Spring Run and Winterpock.

Coming in second place and third place were Winterpock and Greenfield, respectively.
