NUTRITION TIP OF THE WEEK

Robious COrridor OnlineI have had a few questions about the benefits and risks of soy products. Although it is widely used in many products and vegetarian diets, there are a few reasons that soy should be used in moderation and in some cases, totally avoided.

Soy baby formulas may have negative health impacts due to the difficulty in digesting the protein and high estrogen compounds. Although breast milk is best, there are plenty of formulas without soy.

Women who have had breast cancer should eliminate all soy from their diet due to the soy phytoestrogens. This can also disrupt endocrine function, which can be linked to hypothyroidism.

We know that MSG is a flavor enhancer that can have many negative side effects and considered a neurotoxin, but did you know it is also naturally formed during soy food processing?
The high levels of phytic acid in soy can decrease our body’s ability to absorb calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc. This can also increase our body’s need for vitamin D.

Fermented, organic soy products in moderation are the best option if you enjoy soy, but most other commercial products are genetically modified and may contain higher pesticide levels.
A serving of edamame is okay, but I would look at food labels to limit the processed soybean oil, soy isoflavones, and soy milk products.
