Chesterfield County PoliceSome things —wine, cheese, your dad’s vinyl record collection — improve with age. Some things don’t.

Once again, we’re receiving reports from victims of what we’re calling the “missed jury duty” scam. We received reports of this scam in 2015 and in 2016, and, like that trashcan you tried to throw away, it’s back.

The current scam involves someone calling from a local number and claiming to be Officer/Sergeant Phillips with the Sheriff’s Office. The suspect then tells the victim they must send money via a pre-paid card to avoid being arrested for failing to appear for jury duty.

The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Chesterfield County Police Department are NEVER going to ask you to buy pre-paid cards and send money to avoid jail time. Please, DO NOT give these callers your information and DO NOT give them money.

These calls can be scary, and the caller is counting on you to be intimidated enough to send the money. DON’T DO IT. Hang up and call the police. Please, talk to everyone you know about this scam. Help us spread the word.

CCPD can be reached, day or night, at 804-748-1251. Please share.
