On Friday, January 11 the Sheppard Street Gym, or the “Rut,” was filled with a trifecta of high school basketball, which included the JV basketball team, the St. Gertrude’s varsity basketball team and the Benedictine varsity basketball team. All three teams faced off against St. John Paul the Great.

The JV team (9-1) set the tone early with a 70-43 win. Sophomores Cody Herman and Juwan Dent, along with freshman Anthony Fisher, led them.

The St. Gertrude’s Varsity basketball team (7-3) suffered a loss Friday evening. They were led by sophomore Nan Kerner and junior Caroline Gill. The varsity basketball team lost a tough one, with a final score of 63-70. Senior Noah Lindsey and freshman Wendall Tomlin led them.

With both varsity programs playing on the same day and on the same court, a new tradition for St. Gertrude and Benedictine looks to begin. The “Rut” was filled with fans from both schools. “The Rut hasn’t been packed like this for a while,” said Cadet Alex Coleman. “The atmosphere was crazy.”

All three teams look to finish off their seasons strong.
