The Maroons from Roanoke College won their first ever NCAA Baseball South Regional by downing the number one seed, Salisbury last Sunday afternoon. Next stop?  The NCAA Division III College World Series at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium Appleton, Wisconsin in Appleton.  The first pitch will cross the plate at 2:15 pm EST on Friday. Roanoke is the first ODAC team to advance to the College World Series since 2005.

So, what’s the big deal for the Robious Corridor?  Playing for the Roanoke squad are Midlothian High School alumni Rawlings Cumbea and Matthew Franklin.   That’s the big deal!  Cumbea played a critical role for the Maroons last week against a powerful Salisbury team.

With the score 12-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Salisbury had a runner on first base but Roanoke’s Rawlings Cumbea got Salisbury’s Jack Barry to ground into a double play to give Roanoke the NCAA South Regional title and its first appearance in the Division III World Series.  Cumbea also notched another save in the pivotal performance.  Cumbea, a right handed senior, heads into the College world series with four saves and a 1.90 ERA for the 2017 season.

Matthew Franklin

Matthew Franklin, only a sophomore, made seven starts on the mound for Roanoke this season.  A stand out right handed pitcher for the Midlothian Trojans just a few years ago, look for Franklin to play a critical role for the Maroons as they advance to center stage, the NCAA Division III College World Series

Roanoke will face Oswego State at 2:15EST on Friday.  To follow on twitter, follow @NCAADIII CWS.
