Columbia Gas Partners with Communities in Schools Chesterfield

Helping students and communities succeed is goal of new Communities In Schools and Columbia Gas partnership

$5,000 grant from NiSource Charitable Foundation to support local school programs

ColumbiaHelping local students stay in school and achieve in life is the goal of a new partnership announced today by officials from Communities In Schools Chesterfield (CIS) and Columbia Gas of Virginia.

CIS Executive Director Ashley Hall joined Brian Elliott, finance director for Columbia Gas of Virginia, and Dr. Kenneth Butta, principal at the Carver College and Career Academy to announce a contribution to CIS by the Columbia Gas parent company foundation, along with a commitment by Columbia to support and promote volunteers for CIS programs and
activities.

“Chesterfield County students and families represent the future of this community ,” Elliott said. “As a company headquartered in Chester, with a significant portion of our employee and customer base located in this region, it’s important for us to be a partner in the Communities In Schools effort. Together, we can help students and families get the support they need, while enhancing the long-term strength and vitality of this entire region.”

In support of the program, Columbia Gas today presented a $5,000 grant from the NiSource Charitable Foundation to Communities In Schools of Chesterfield. Columbia Gas
is a unit of NiSource Inc.

“Having the support and partnership of companies like Columbia Gas is vital in helping Communities In Schools meet the growing needs for mentors, volunteers, and financial resources for our programs,” Hall said. “Together, we can inspire, nurture, and motivate students and families towards a bright future.”

The mission of Communities In Schools Chesterfield is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Many children face challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Through a school-based coordinator, CIS strategically aligns and delivers needed resources so that students can focus on learning. CIS builds relationships with students, teachers, families, and multiple community resources, with a singular focus, improving academic achievement.

With more than 1,000 active volunteers, CIS currently serves students at seven Chesterfield County Public Schools, including Meadowbrook High School, Falling Creek Middle School, Salem Church Middle School, Bellwood Elementary School, Chalkley Elementary School, Ettrick Elementary School and Carver College and Career Academy.
